Punk-rock had already been suggested as a musical style by the likes of The Stooges, MC5 and the New York Dolls, but it took off in the mid-70s with Patti Smith, Ramones and The Sex Pistols. In particular, the Sex Pistols had a massive effect on British culture, epitomising punk in many ways other than their music. Most importantly, they were anti-authoritarian, rejecting mainstream values and conventional wisdom, reflected in their music which rejected conventional rules.
Formed in 1962, in Kansas City, Missouri, the group was a high school doo-wop group called The Sinceres. By 1971, the band consisted of Melvin Webb on drums, Roger Durham on percussion, Charles Love on guitar and vocals, Charles McCormick on bass, Harry Williams on percussion, and Willis Draffen on guitar. The members had renamed themselves Bloodstone, and after learning to play their respective musical instruments, moved to Los Angeles, California.

Eddie Spaghetti has been the ringleader of the Supersuckers since 1988. But with the band's creation of its own conglomerate (Mid Fi Recordings) in 2002, Spaghetti also found time for a tidy, good-timin' solo career. Sauce appeared in 2004; it featured covers of outlaw country favorites from Kristofferson and Cash as well as a few Spaghetti originals. The Supersuckers were still a band during Eddie's dalliance -- they released a few live records and even toured with Pearl Jam. In 2005 Spaghetti had found enough time and songs for another solo flight, and released Old No. 2. He inked a deal with Bloodshot Records in 2010, resulting in the release of Sundowner in early 2011. --- by Johnny Loftus

The Spotnicks is an instrumental rock group from Sweden, who were formed in 1961. They were famous for wearing "space suit" costumes on stage, and for their innovative electronic guitar sound. They have since released 42 albums, selling more than 18 million records, and still tour.

If remembered at all today, it is probably thanks to their silly astronaut costumes, but in the '60s the Spotnicks were one of the most successful instrumental rock groups, alongside the Shadows and the Ventures.
